Do you think the Pledge of Allegiance should be forced on students? For decades, elementary school children across the country had been required to stand and say the Pledge of Allegiance to the American flag every school-day morning. That practice has recently been questioned, and standing and reciting the pledge is now voluntary. Should students be required to say the pledge, should it remain voluntary, or should the practice be abandoned entirely?

Well, I think the Pledge of Allegiance should not be forced. We first have to know that the Pledge of Allegiance is basically an oath of loyalty to the United States of America. It is about national pride and patriotism. It is also the students' choice whether they want to do it or not, or else, it would be a violation of freedom of speech which is a big thing in the United States of America. Some students may not want to do it because of their religion or their culture. It would not be respecting them if the school forces them to do it. Schools should be welcoming to students, but forcing patriotism doesn't seem like a welcoming learning environment. Some exchange students may also not like to show patriotism to a country that they will be just in for a few weeks or months. Also, it would be impossible for the school to punish a child who refuses to speak the Pledge of Allegiance. It is illegal for the government or in this case a school to force a citizen to confess by word or tell an oath. It is against freedom of speech which would also include not speaking. It would be also unethical for the school to force a person to recite an oath that shows patriotism if they don't want to do it. It also includes "under god" which some students could find uncomfortable if they believe in another religion. The school also has literally no authority to force a student to recite the Pledge of Allegiance, even though there is a law forcing public schools to recite the Pledge of Allegiance, schools can't force an individual student to do it.
