Hi! Do you like learning new languages? Well, today's topic is "Should schools offer sign language in addition to foreign languages?".
I think they should offer sign language. The first reason is that foreign has 2 meanings, "of, from, in, or characteristic of a country or language other than one's own." or "unfamiliar thing". And I think we are talking about the first definition. You may say, "But wait that is wrong!" Sign language is not from another country! But at the end, it says "language other than one's own" I think it means language that you don't know. And sign language counts as it. It is also a great skill for new exciting careers like helping people that are deaf or translating them into words. Or it could be something that you can brag to a friend. You can also help people when they are in an emergency. Like a deaf person could be in an emergency and you can help when you know sign language, you can help them. It can also earn you some degree. Which can help you get some specific jobs. It can also help you get language credit if you are in college. There are also reasons like it help your brain get smarter and it can make your brain exercise or be better, or it can also enhance your memory which is pretty important as you get old. And there are lots of people who use sign language, which means that they should probably mark it as a language that you can learn in school. It is the language that you can communicate with others, which is pretty cool in my opinion.
But like everything in the world, it has a side effect, it can confuse people that are learning English because learning English is hard. It is no easy task, and if kids get confused between sign language AND English, it won't be a good thing at all. It could come back to them when they get older. Also, they would need money to hire teachers, and I think they will be pretty expensive.
Of course, sign language is good language to learn, but it can be expensive and it can confuse people that are learning english.
