Smoking is not healthy for your body and those around you. But a lot of people from all over the world still smoke. But since smoking can harm others, public places such as libraries and museums are now smoke-free environments, and restaurants are required to have separate smoking and non-smoking sections. Some smoke-free advocates are now campaigning to ban smoking in all restaurants and bars. Do you think this is a good idea? Why or why not?
I think this is a good idea. Smoking is legal, but if it harms others, it should be banned. Secondhand smoke, which is the usual way that people get harmed from being near a person smoking can cause heart disease, stroke, lung cancer, and other diseases. Secondhand smoke can also fasten death and cause slowed lung growth in children. Around 41,000 people die every year from secondhand smoke. This shows how serious the problem is, and even though it is banned from public places, there are plenty of people who smoke outside the building which causes the same problem. This prevents nothing since people going into the building will inhale the smoke anyway. It would be also a good idea to ban smoking. This would save a lot of people from cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. Smoking is also addictive and banning it could save people from ruining their life. Smoking can cause several serious health problems which could even lead a person to death. This is dangerous, it is like drugs but causes long-term effects instead of short-term effects like drugs.
But banning smoking from restaurants and bars is unfair. If there are separate smoking and non-smoking area, it will be safe for non-smokers. There is no need to ban it because it is the freedom of people whether they want to smoke or not if it doesn't harm others. A lot of companies also depend on smoking for profit, and if they ban smoking from bars and restaurants, it could have some heavy economy effects on the country and even on people who don't smoke. Sure it is unhealthy, but it is people's freedom.
